Frequently Asked Questions

Crude sulfate turpentine is one of the kraft pulping process byproducts of pine wood. It is a cheap material with limited applications and contains malodorous organic sulfur compounds, elimination of which is costly.

Raw sulphate turpentine is mainly used in the production of perfumes and flavors. The primary end-use industries for sulphated crude oil are cosmetics, food and beverages.

Crude sulfate turpentine is produced during the Kraft wood-pulping process, where wood chips are “cooked” in digesters with a water solution of sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfide (white liquor) under pressure and heat.

Crude Sulphate Turpentine (CST) is a valuable extract from softwood. This renewable raw material is fractionated and the fractions are utilised in a wide range of applications including fragrances, flavours, detergents, solvents and thinners.

(tûr′pən-tīn′) n. 1. A thin volatile terpenoid essential oil, C10H16, obtained by steam distillation or other means from the wood or exudate of certain pine trees and used as a paint thinner, solvent, and medicinally as a liniment.

Turpentine mainly consists of alpha-pinene and beta-pinene with smaller percentages of limonene, camphene, carene, and terpinene. Alpha-pinene and beta-pinene are isomers of pinene. Terpinenes are isomeric hydrocarbons belonging to the terpene class.

Turpentine is a very useful industrial chemical. Since Turpentine is highly effective and naturally derived, it is the traditional go-to quality paint thinner for most oil-based paints, enamels, and varnishes. It aids the paint in bonding, coating, and penetrating every type of wooden surface

Turpentine is composed primarily of the terpene hydrocarbons: alpha-pinene, beta-pinene, delta-3-carene, and small amounts of other terpenes such limonene, camphene, and terpinolene.

Turpentine is poisonous if swallowed. Children and adults can die from drinking turpentine. Fortunately, turpentine causes taste and odor problems before reaching toxic levels in humans. Turpentine is thought to be only mildly toxic when used according to manufacturers’ recommendations.
